Season 3 - Future

Opening Scene

Sophie arrives at the hotel at 11 PM. She's exhausted. She just wants her room.

There's nobody at the front desk. Just a screen. It scans her face. In three seconds, she has her digital key on her phone.

The elevator already knows her floor. A small robot delivers water and towels ten minutes later. The room is already at 68°F, her preferred temperature, because the system remembers her from last time.

She never spoke to anyone.
And honestly?
It was the best check-in experience of her life.

Origin

From roadside inns to hotels run by algorithms

For thousands of years, hospitality meant one basic thing: a human taking care of another human. The Greeks had xenia (their sacred rule to welcome strangers), the Romans built roadside taverns, and medieval inns provided that first sweet taste of safety after days on the road.

Now, that whole model is shifting.

Labor costs typically account for about one-third of hotel operating expenses, and staffing shortages have persisted across much of the hospitality industry since the pandemic. Hotels didn't start automating because they wanted to look like science fiction, they started because finding and keeping workers became increasingly difficult.

The Phenomenon

This isn't science fiction anymore.

This is happening right now.

By 2024, more than 20,000 service robots were working across hotels, resorts, and restaurants worldwide.

Hilton introduced Connie, an AI-powered concierge capable of answering thousands of guest questions before handing more complex requests to human staff. Marriott uses AI chatbots for guest communication, while Aloft Hotels deployed Botlr, a delivery robot that rides elevators by itself to bring items directly to guest rooms.

Industry surveys show that a majority of hotels planned to expand their use of AI by 2025, from guest communication and pricing to housekeeping and maintenance.

The global market for AI in hospitality is expected to grow rapidly over the next decade as hotels continue investing in automation, personalization, and operational efficiency.
